Understanding what changes in summer, and what warning signs to act on immediately, could prevent an accident on one of Dubai's busy highways.
How Heat Affects Your Brake System
Disc brakes work by clamping friction pads against a spinning metal rotor. This converts kinetic energy to heat β which is dissipated into the air through the rotor. In July, with ambient temperatures at 46Β°C and road surfaces at 70Β°C, the braking system starts each stop from a higher baseline temperature. Repeated braking in stop-start highway traffic generates cumulative heat that builds faster and dissipates slower than in cooler conditions. This affects every component in the system.
Brake Fluid β The Most Heat-Sensitive Component
Brake fluid is hygroscopic β it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere over time. As the water content increases, the fluid's boiling point drops. When brake fluid boils under heavy braking, it creates vapour bubbles in the hydraulic lines. Vapour compresses; fluid does not. The result is a soft, spongy brake pedal that may go to the floor β a phenomenon called brake fade. In Dubai's summer, sustained operation at the upper end of the pad's thermal envelope accelerates wear and can cause surface glazing β where the pad compound hardens and becomes less effective at friction. A glazed pad has noticeably reduced stopping power and may produce a high-pitched squeal or vibration under braking. - Car pulling to one side under braking: Indicates uneven pad wear, a seized caliper, or a brake hose issue on one side
- Burning smell after normal city driving: A seized brake caliper keeps the pad in contact with the rotor constantly β the rotor and pad overheat. This can cause a brake fire in severe cases
- Brake warning light: Either the handbrake is applied (check first) or the brake fluid level has dropped β which indicates worn pads or a fluid leak
How Often Should Brakes Be Inspected in the UAE?
Brake pads should be visually inspected at every oil change β the technician should report the remaining pad thickness in millimetres. Replace at 3 mm remaining in UAE conditions; do not wait for the 1β2 mm minimum that applies in cooler climates, because summer heat accelerates the final wear stage disproportionately.
