Dashboard warning lights are your car's way of communicating β€” but the difference between "pull over now" and "book a service this week" isn't always obvious. This guide covers the most common lights Dubai drivers encounter and exactly what action each requires.

Red Lights: Stop or Pull Over

πŸ”΄ Engine Temperature (Thermometer in Coolant)

Pull over safely immediately. Turn off AC, turn heater on max. If temperature doesn't drop within 2–3 minutes, stop the engine. Do not drive further β€” severe engine damage occurs within minutes of overheating.

πŸ”΄ Oil Pressure (Oil Can Icon)

Stop the engine within seconds. This indicates critically low oil pressure β€” metal-on-metal contact is already occurring. Driving even 1 km can destroy engine bearings. Check oil level before restarting.

πŸ”΄ Battery (Battery Icon)

Your charging system has failed. The car is running on battery only β€” it will stop within minutes to hours. Get to a garage immediately. In Dubai summer heat, don't run AC β€” you need every amp for the ignition system.

πŸ”΄ Brake System Warning

If this appears while driving (not just handbrake-on), it indicates low brake fluid or brake system failure. Test brakes gently. If braking feels different, pull over and call for assistance.

Amber Lights: Address Soon

🟑 Check Engine (Engine Outline)

The most misunderstood light. Solid amber = get a diagnostic scan within a week. Flashing amber = reduce speed and load immediately, get to a workshop today β€” a flashing check engine indicates active misfiring that can damage the catalytic converter.

🟑 Tyre Pressure (TPMS β€” Flat Tyre with Exclamation)

One or more tyres below the threshold pressure. Stop when safe, identify which tyre and check pressure. In Dubai summer, a rapid pressure drop may indicate a puncture that needs immediate attention.

🟑 Transmission Temperature

Transmission overheating. Reduce load β€” slow down, avoid hard acceleration, if possible pull over and let the system cool (15+ minutes). Continuing under load can damage clutch packs. Common in Dubai traffic with degraded ATF.

🟑 Service Due / Spanner Icon

Mileage or time-based service is due. Not an emergency but don't defer more than 1,000–2,000 km.

Blue/Green Lights: Information

Blue and green lights are informational β€” high beam on (blue), cruise control active (green), indicators, etc. They don't indicate faults.

Why Dubai's Heat Changes the Urgency

In 45Β°C ambient temperature, the consequences of ignoring red warning lights escalate faster than in cooler climates. An overheating engine in Dubai summer reaches critical internal temperatures in less than 2 minutes of continued driving. Low oil pressure on a hot engine causes bearing failure within seconds. Act faster here than you would anywhere else.
