Dubai winters are mild by global standards — but after five months of 40°C+ heat, 15°C feels cold and rain feels like an event. For drivers who've spent summer in full AC mode, the shift to winter conditions brings a few genuine vehicle concerns worth understanding.
Tyre Pressure Drops in Cooler Weather
Tyre pressure drops approximately 1 PSI for every 5–6°C reduction in ambient temperature. After a summer where your tyres were set at 35°C air temperature, a 15°C Dubai night could reduce pressure by 4–5 PSI — enough to affect handling and fuel economy. Check tyre pressures in November and reset them to manufacturer spec in cooler morning temperatures.
Rain on Dubai Roads Is Genuinely Dangerous
Dubai roads are designed for heat, not rain. Concrete and tarmac surfaces become extremely slippery when light rain hits oil and dust accumulation that's been baking for months. The first 15 minutes of rain on a Dubai road is when most accidents happen — traction is far lower than drivers accustomed to rain in other countries expect.
- Add at least 3x your normal following distance in the first 10 minutes of rain
- Avoid sudden braking — apply brakes progressively
- Check wiper blade condition now — rubber degrades in Dubai heat and wipes may streak badly after months unused
- Ensure your headlights and tail lights function — visibility drops quickly in rain
Battery Performance Changes
Car batteries weakened by summer heat show up as starting problems in cooler winter mornings. Internal resistance increases slightly in cold, and a marginal battery that started fine all summer may fail to turn over on a cool January morning. Load test your battery in October or November — replacement before failure is far preferable to being stranded.
AC System Adjustment
Dubai winters still require some AC use — interior temperatures on sunny days still exceed ambient comfortably. However, running the AC on full blast with all windows closed in 18°C air is unnecessarily stressful on the system. Use fresh air mode where practical and give your AC compressor some seasonal relief after its five-month endurance test.
Engine Warm-Up
At 15°C, modern engines still reach operating temperature quickly — typically 3–5 minutes of normal driving. There's no need to idle the car for extended periods. However, avoid high RPM in the first kilometre until oil has fully circulated and reached viscosity.
Wiper Blades and Washer Fluid
UAE summer heat causes wiper rubber to harden and crack. Test your wipers before the first winter rain, not during it. If they streak, smear or chatter, replace them — a 60–120 AED wiper set is considerably cheaper than reduced visibility at speed.
