Manufacturer service schedules are designed for average global conditions — a mix of climates, traffic types and usage patterns. Dubai is categorically not average. The combination of heat, stop-start traffic, continuous AC load, dust and sand puts most components under significantly more stress than the manufacturer's interval assumes. Here's item by item: follow the book, or adjust?
| Item | Manufacturer Interval | UAE Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil (full synthetic) | 10,000–15,000 km | 7,500–10,000 km |
| Engine oil (mineral/semi) | 5,000–7,500 km | 5,000 km or 6 months |
| Engine air filter | 20,000–30,000 km | 15,000–20,000 km |
| Cabin air filter | 20,000–30,000 km | 12,000–15,000 km |
| ATF (automatic transmission) | 60,000–100,000 km | 40,000–60,000 km |
| Coolant flush | Every 3–5 years | Every 2 years |
| Brake fluid | Every 2 years | Every 2 years (unchanged) |
| Spark plugs (iridium) | 60,000–100,000 km | Follow manufacturer |
| Tyres | Replace at 2mm tread | Replace at 3mm + check age at 5 years |
| Battery | Replace at failure | Load test annually after year 2 |
| Drive belt (serpentine) | Inspect at 80,000 km | Inspect at 60,000 km |
| Differential fluid | Every 40,000–60,000 km | Every 30,000–40,000 km (more for off-road) |
| AC refrigerant check | As needed | Annual pre-summer check |
Why These Adjustments?
Oil Change Intervals
Engine oil oxidises faster at higher temperatures. Dubai's summer temperatures mean oil is at or above its optimal operating temperature range for more of its service life than in cooler climates. Reducing the interval by 20–30% is protective without being excessive.
Air Filters
Dubai's dust is year-round but peaks in summer with shamal winds and construction activity. Air filters load faster here — inspect visually at each service and replace based on condition rather than only mileage.
Transmission Fluid
ATF thermal cycling in Dubai stop-start traffic accelerates degradation. The "lifetime" fluid claim on some vehicles is particularly inappropriate for UAE conditions — a practical maximum of 60,000 km is recommended for any vehicle with a conventional torque converter automatic.
Coolant
Cooling systems work harder in Dubai. Coolant additives that prevent corrosion and scale are consumed faster. A 2-year flush interval rather than 3 removes degraded coolant before scale builds up inside the radiator and reduces long-term cooling system efficiency.
The Case Against Over-Servicing
The above adjustments are moderate and evidence-based. Servicing oil every 3,000 km (as some suggest) is unnecessary with modern full synthetic oil and a clean, well-maintained engine — it adds cost without proportional benefit. The goal is calibrating to UAE conditions, not over-engineering.
