A cooling system leak in Dubai's August heat is a time-critical problem. Unlike a slow oil leak that may give weeks of warning, a coolant leak can drain the system sufficiently to cause overheating within a single drive β and an overheated engine can cross from a minor repair to a catastrophic failure in minutes. This article explains how to identify a leak, locate its source, and understand what the repair involves β so you can make an informed decision and avoid being stranded on a motorway in 46Β°C heat.
How to Recognise a Coolant Leak
The first indication is usually one of the following:
- Coolant level dropping: Check the translucent reservoir tank next to the radiator when the engine is cold. If the level has dropped since you last checked β especially if you have checked weekly as recommended in UAE summer β there is a leak
- Sweet smell from the engine bay: Ethylene glycol (the base component of most coolants) has a distinctive sweet smell. Any sweet odour from the engine bay or entering the cabin through the ventilation system is a leak indicator
- Coloured puddle under the car: Coolant is typically bright green, orange, red, or blue depending on the formulation. A puddle under the front of the car (not water from the AC drain, which is clear and expected) in the coolant's colour indicates an external leak
- White smoke from the exhaust: Steam from the exhaust β distinct from condensation on a cold morning β indicates coolant entering the combustion chamber through a head gasket or cracked component
- White crusty residue around hose fittings: Dried coolant leaves a white or pastel-coloured mineral deposit wherever it has evaporated from a seeping connection
The Most Common Leak Sources in UAE Conditions
Radiator Hoses
The upper and lower radiator hoses connect the engine to the radiator. In the UAE, the combination of sustained high-temperature operation and UV radiation causes rubber hoses to harden and crack from the outside while they soften and swell internally near hot water flow. Hose failure is often visible β look for cracks, bulging, or wet patches. Hoses should be replaced every 5 years or 100,000 km regardless of condition in UAE conditions. A split hose can drain the system within 10 minutes of driving. Hose replacement: AED 80β200 per hose for standard vehicles, more for tight access European vehicles.
Hose Clamps
The spring-type hose clamps fitted at the factory lose tension over time as the rubber hoses compress and harden. A loose clamp allows coolant to seep out under pressure. This is often visible as a white deposit around the clamp area, or as a drip when the system is at full operating temperature and pressure. Clamp replacement or retightening is the lowest-cost coolant leak fix: AED 30β80 per clamp.
Radiator Leaks
Modern radiators use aluminium cores with plastic end tanks. The joint between the aluminium core and the plastic tanks is a common failure point β particularly after years of thermal cycling between cold start and operating temperature in UAE conditions. A radiator leak is usually visible as a wet patch on the radiator core or a coolant trail down the front of the radiator. Radiator replacement: AED 500β1,200 for common Japanese and Korean vehicles; AED 900β2,500 for European vehicles. Repair of the plastic-to-aluminium joint is not reliably durable β replacement is preferred.
Water Pump Seal
The water pump shaft seal prevents coolant from escaping along the pump shaft. As the seal ages, it begins to weep β a small amount of coolant escapes and is deposited below the pump as a stain or residue. The weep hole on most water pumps is located at the bottom of the pump housing and is designed to indicate seal failure. If coolant is dripping from the weep hole, the pump seal (or the pump itself) needs replacement. Water pump replacement: AED 600β1,800 depending on vehicle and access difficulty.
Thermostat Housing
The thermostat housing connects to the engine block and contains the thermostat and temperature sensor. On many engines β particularly common Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi applications in the UAE β the housing is made of plastic and cracks after years of heat cycling. This is identifiable as a crack in the plastic housing itself, usually accompanied by coolant staining on the nearby engine surface. Housing replacement including a new thermostat: AED 200β500.
Heater Core
The heater core is a small radiator inside the dashboard that heats the cabin air. A leaking heater core causes coolant to drip inside the cabin β usually onto the front passenger footwell carpet β and produces a sweet smell inside the car with the ventilation on. Heater core replacement requires partial dashboard removal and is a significant labour job: AED 900β3,000 depending on vehicle access.
Head Gasket
When a head gasket fails between a coolant passage and a combustion chamber, coolant is consumed by the engine without any external visible leak. Signs: white smoke from exhaust, coolant level dropping with no external puddle, frothy or milky oil on the dipstick. A combustion leak test (block test) using chemical dye in the coolant reservoir confirms head gasket combustion ingress quickly and reliably. This is the most expensive coolant leak repair: AED 3,000β8,000.
How a Pressure Test Locates the Leak
A cooling system pressure test pressurises the system using a hand pump attached to the radiator filler neck β to the same pressure as the radiator cap's relief setting (typically 0.9β1.1 bar). If the system holds pressure, there is no external leak (a head gasket test is needed to check for internal combustion ingress). If pressure drops, the technician inspects every component under pressure β hoses, clamps, the radiator core, water pump and thermostat housing β to find where coolant is escaping. This test takes 20β30 minutes and is the definitive diagnostic tool for cooling system leaks.
Can You Top Up and Drive?
If the coolant level is slightly low, topping up with distilled water or premixed coolant allows you to drive a short distance to a garage β as long as you monitor the temperature gauge constantly. If the gauge moves toward the red zone at any point, pull over immediately. Do not make a long trip with a known coolant leak in August heat.
