August is Dubai's most unforgiving month for engines. With ambient temperatures at or above 46Β°C and humidity adding to the thermal load, a cooling system that was borderline in July will fail in August. Engine overheating is not a minor inconvenience β€” a warped cylinder head costs AED 4,000–12,000. A blown head gasket costs AED 3,000–8,000. A seized engine is a total loss. The decisions you make in the first 60 seconds of an overheating event determine whether you walk away with a repair bill or a write-off.

The Warning Signs β€” In Order of Urgency

Overheating rarely happens without warning. The signs appear in sequence:

If your temperature warning light illuminates or the gauge enters the red zone, act in this order:

  1. Turn the AC off immediately β€” the AC compressor adds load to the engine and prevents the cooling system from keeping up
  2. Switch the cabin heater to maximum heat and maximum fan speed β€” the heater core is a secondary heat exchanger that can remove several kilowatts of heat from the coolant
  3. If in traffic, try to move to a flowing road β€” airflow through the radiator at speed is significantly more effective than idle cooling
  4. If the gauge continues toward red, pull over safely and switch off β€” choose the right shoulder or a car park; do not stop on a live lane
  5. Do not open the bonnet for 15–20 minutes β€” the cooling system is pressurised; opening the bonnet vents heat but touching anything risks serious burns
  6. Never open the radiator or coolant cap while the engine is hot β€” pressurised boiling coolant will spray violently and cause severe burns
  7. Call for assistance β€” do not restart a hot engine and drive. Even a short distance on an overheated engine can cross the threshold from a repairable situation to a destroyed engine

The Most Common Causes in UAE Summer

Coolant Leak

The most common cause of sudden overheating. A small leak β€” from a hose, hose clamp, water pump seal, or radiator β€” that was weeping slowly in cooler months becomes a fast drain in August heat. The system loses pressure and the coolant boiling point drops, causing rapid overheating. Check for wet patches or dried white residue under the car and around hose connections weekly in August.

Degraded Coolant

Coolant that has not been changed within the recommended interval loses its corrosion inhibitors and becomes acidic. Acidic coolant attacks aluminium components from the inside β€” the water pump impeller corrodes and loses efficiency, radiator tubes narrow with scale deposits, and thermostat operation becomes erratic. In August, these marginal components fail under the peak thermal load. A coolant flush is the single most effective preventive measure before August.

Failed Thermostat

The thermostat controls when coolant flows from the engine to the radiator. A thermostat stuck in the closed position means coolant never reaches the radiator for cooling β€” temperatures rise rapidly. A thermostat stuck open means the engine never reaches operating temperature β€” less dramatic but damaging long-term through increased fuel consumption and accelerated wear. Water Pump Failure

The first symptom is the temperature gauge rising. Water pump replacement: AED 600–1,800 depending on vehicle and access.

Radiator Blockage

External blockage β€” insects, sand, and road debris clogging the radiator fins β€” reduces airflow. This is particularly common on vehicles that spend time off-road or in desert conditions. Internal blockage from coolant scale reduces heat transfer. A blocked radiator at maximum load in August heat is insufficient β€” the coolant arrives hot and leaves nearly as hot. A pressure test and flow check diagnoses both conditions.

Head Gasket Failure

A head gasket seals the combustion chambers from the coolant passages. When it fails, combustion gases enter the coolant system β€” pressurising it beyond the cap's relief pressure, causing rapid coolant loss, and introducing hot gases that prevent effective cooling. Signs: white smoke from the exhaust, sweet-smelling exhaust, coolant loss without visible external leak, milky oil on the dipstick or filler cap.
