A Dubai car AC runs continuously from May to September — approximately 3,000 hours of operation in five months. For context, a car AC in a European country might run 200–400 hours per year. The cumulative stress on every component in the system is proportionally enormous.
What Actually Fails and Why
Compressor
The compressor is the heart of the AC system — it pressurises the refrigerant. In Dubai, the compressor runs at maximum load against a high-temperature environment for months at a time. Compressor seal wear leads to refrigerant loss. Compressor bearing wear leads to noise and eventual seizure. A compressor replacement is the most expensive AC repair: typically 1,500–4,000 AED depending on vehicle.
Condenser
The condenser sits in front of the radiator and dissipates heat from the refrigerant. In Dubai's dust and sandstorm conditions, the condenser fins become clogged with fine particulate material, reducing its ability to shed heat. This causes system pressure to rise, which stresses the compressor and accelerates refrigerant loss through seals. Condenser cleaning is a regular maintenance item in UAE conditions.
Refrigerant Loss
All AC systems lose small amounts of refrigerant over time through microscopic seal permeation. In high-heat, high-load conditions this happens faster. A system that was charged correctly in April may be 10–15% low by September. Low refrigerant causes the compressor to work harder, generating more heat, accelerating the loss further. Annual refrigerant pressure checks are recommended.
Cabin Air Filter
Dubai's dusty air rapidly clogs cabin filters. A blocked filter restricts airflow through the evaporator, reduces cooling efficiency, and can cause the evaporator to ice over — stopping cooling entirely until the ice melts. This is often mistaken for an AC fault when a simple filter replacement would fix it. Replace every 15,000–20,000 km in UAE conditions.
Expansion Valve and Evaporator
The expansion valve regulates refrigerant flow into the evaporator. Contaminated or degraded refrigerant oil can block the valve, causing poor cooling or complete AC failure. Evaporator coils can also develop leaks over time — an expensive repair requiring dashboard removal on most vehicles.
How to Protect Your AC System
- Annual AC service including pressure test and refrigerant top-up if needed
- Cabin filter replacement every 15,000 km — more often if driving on dusty roads
- Condenser cleaning at each service (debris is often visible)
- Don't run AC at maximum cold continuously — a moderate setting reduces compressor cycling frequency
- Park in shade to reduce the initial heat load the system must overcome
- If AC starts blowing less cold, address it early — delayed repairs accelerate compressor damage
