April is too late. By April, Dubai workshops are filling with emergency AC calls from people whose systems failed in the first week of serious heat. March is the right window β temperatures are comfortable, garages have capacity and any parts that need ordering can arrive before summer begins in earnest.
Why March Specifically?
The UAE's serious heat window runs approximately May through September. By March, temperatures are hitting 30Β°C and climbing β enough to tell you how your AC performs, but not yet so hot that you're in genuine distress while waiting for a workshop appointment. March also catches any compressor or refrigerant issues before summer demand drives up wait times at every AC-capable workshop in Dubai.
The Pre-Summer AC Checklist
β AC Pre-Summer Check β What Should Be Inspected
- Refrigerant pressure test (high and low side)
- Compressor engagement β does it clutch smoothly, does it cycle correctly?
- Condenser condition β clean of debris, fins straight, no corrosion damage
- Cabin air filter β replace if grey or heavily loaded with dust
- Evaporator coil β check for ice formation (indicates low refrigerant or airflow issue)
- Blower motor operation β all speeds, no rattling
- Temperature output β front and rear vents reaching correct cold temperature
- Vent controls and mode switching β all modes functional
- Belt condition β AC compressor drive belt
- AC drainage β condensate drain tube clear (blocked drains cause interior water leaks)
Refrigerant: Top Up or Full Service?
If your AC has lost refrigerant, the right approach is to find and fix the leak before recharging β not just adding gas. A system that lost refrigerant has a leak somewhere. Simply recharging without finding the leak means you'll be back in six months doing it again.
A proper leak test uses UV dye or electronic leak detection. Once the source is found and repaired (typically a seal, O-ring, or hose fitting), a full vacuum and recharge with the correct refrigerant type and quantity restores full performance.
Compressor Pre-Season Inspection
The compressor is the expensive component. Signs it's not operating optimally: AC takes longer than 3 minutes to reach cold from hot car startup, temperature difference between vent and ambient is less than 15Β°C, compressor clutch engages/disengages too frequently. These symptoms in March β when the demand is moderate β can indicate a compressor that will struggle or fail in July.
Cost of Pre-Summer AC Service
- AC inspection and pressure test: 150β300 AED
- Refrigerant recharge (if needed): 200β500 AED depending on vehicle and refrigerant type
- Cabin air filter: 100β200 AED
- Compressor service or replacement: 1,500β5,000 AED if needed β but catching it in March avoids the July waiting list
