This is one of the most common questions we get at FixHive — and the honest answer is: it depends on why your AC isn't working. A re-gas (refrigerant recharge) is only the right solution in specific circumstances. Done without diagnosis, it's often money wasted — because if there's a leak, the gas will escape again.

What a Re-gas Is (and Isn't)

A re-gas simply adds refrigerant (R134a or R1234yf depending on your car's age) to the system to bring it back to the correct charge level. It takes 30–60 minutes and costs 200–500 AED. It does nothing to find or fix the reason the refrigerant was low in the first place. A correctly sealed, leak-free AC system should not lose refrigerant over its lifetime — it's not a consumable that depletes through normal use.

When a Re-gas Is the Right Answer

When a Re-gas Is NOT the Answer

What a Proper AC Service Includes

A correct AC service begins with diagnosis, not a re-gas. The process should be:

  1. Pressure test: connect gauges to high and low side to measure system pressure — does it hold or drop?
  2. Leak detection: UV dye added to the system (if not already present) and inspected with a UV lamp; or electronic leak detection at each component
  3. Component assessment: compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve — each checked for function
  4. Repair the identified fault — seal, O-ring, component replacement
  5. Vacuum the system (remove all air and moisture — critical for long-term reliability)
  6. Recharge with the correct refrigerant quantity

Full AC Overhaul — What It Means

A full overhaul replaces all wear items: compressor, receiver-drier, expansion valve, flush the lines, new O-rings throughout. This is appropriate when the compressor has failed (sending metal fragments through the system), when the system has been contaminated, or on a high-mileage vehicle where all components are nearing the end of their service life. Cost: 3,000–8,000 AED depending on vehicle.

Dubai-Specific Note: May Is Already Late

If you're reading this in May because your AC just failed, you're at the start of the most demanding months. May through September is full summer AC load in Dubai. Book immediately — workshops fill up through June and July. Don't wait for a "convenient time."
