Toyota Land Cruisers are legendarily durable — the UAE's market has countless examples running past 300,000 km and beyond. But reaching these mileages in good condition requires proactive maintenance, not reactive repair. The vehicles we see with terminal engine or transmission issues at 200,000 km are almost always the ones with gaps in their service history.

150,000–200,000 km: What to Address

Timing Belt or Chain Service

The 4.5L V8 diesel (1VD-FTV) uses a timing chain that typically doesn't need replacement at fixed intervals — but should be inspected for stretch if fuel consumption increases or startup rattles appear. The 4.0L V6 petrol (1GR-FE) also uses a timing chain. Routine inspection matters more than scheduled replacement.

Water Pump

Water pump bearing wear increases with mileage. A failed water pump causes rapid overheating — one of the most expensive outcomes on an LC's 1VD engine. Replace proactively at 150,000–180,000 km if not already done.

Front Suspension Overhaul

By 150,000–200,000 km, front suspension components have absorbed the equivalent of millions of speed bump impacts in Dubai conditions. Front lower control arm bushings, ball joints, front sway bar links and shock absorbers typically all need attention in this window. A full front suspension refresh improves handling, reduces tyre wear and extends other drivetrain life.

Fuel Injectors (Diesel)

Diesel injectors accumulate carbon deposits and suffer tip erosion at high mileage. Symptoms: rough idle, hard starting when hot, slight blue or white smoke, reduced power. Injector testing and cleaning: 800–2,000 AED. Replacement: 1,500–4,000 AED per injector on the 1VD.

200,000–300,000 km: The Second Lifetime

Engine Seals and Gaskets

By 200,000 km, valve cover gaskets, rear main seal and various engine case seals will be weeping. They don't always cause immediate issues, but oil on the underfloor accumulates dust and insulates heat — and if the rear main seal fails fully, oil loss accelerates rapidly. A seal refresh at this point is preventive investment.

Differential and Transfer Case

With the mileage these vehicles accumulate, diff and transfer case maintenance must be consistent. Front differential oil every 40,000 km, rear diff every 40,000 km, transfer case every 60,000 km — adjusted for off-road use. Neglect leads to bearing wear and in severe cases, gear failure.

Brake Callipers

At high mileage, brake callipers can seize partially — especially the handbrake mechanism in the rear. This creates uneven braking, rear tyre wear and dragging sensation. Calliper service (cleaning, piston reseal) extends life significantly before full replacement is needed.
